Buy a Vintage Radio Flyer Wagon and Bring Back Memories

Updated on March 17, 2013

The Radio Flyer is a Collectible Classic

Why would anyone want to buy a vintage Radio Flyer wagon? Well, maybe they are like countless folks who have special childhood memories of this sleek little chariot built just for kids. They might also enjoy collecting classic pieces of Americana. When Antonio Pasin came to the United States in 1914, he brought little more than his dreams, and some carpentry skills with him. Over the next several years, he worked and saved. He built the first Radio Flyer wagons and sold them at prices that people could afford. Kids loved these wagons back then, and they still do today. The designs may have changed a bit over the years, but you can still find these wagons being sold today. It's a wagon. It's basic, but sometimes that's good. Sometimes, "basic" leads to the creation of a "classic" Who says that simple doesn't work anymore? Over the years, the makers of Radio Flyer wagons tweaked things occasionally and gave a nod to what was popular at the time. They also did what was needed to keep kids safe, but the basic design of these wagons is a shining example of a great idea standing the test of time.

A great reason to restore a wagon

It is hard to explain how attached we get to the things of our youth. It's easy however, to understand why we would want to share our childhood memories with our children. I was looking around for information about how to restore an old Radio Flyer, when I happened across a really cool thread in a forum about tractors (of all things). In this fascinating little thread, you can actually watch as a dad goes through the process of restoring an old wagon for his little boy's second birthday. He had a really great idea to make the restored wagon match his own very well restored Ford Mustang (nice car). Anyway, check it out if you like to watch step by step restorations or if you just want to read about someone doing something special for his little boy's birthday. It's a nice thing to see.

I never really gave wagons a second thought when I was little. It just seemed like someone always had one around when it came time to haul things somewhere. Sometimes we were hauling supplies for our latest clubhouse, and sometimes we were hauling around someone's little brother or sister who was tagging along. The funny thing is, looking back, those wagons show up in an awful lot of my memories. If I ever see any of my old friends from the neighborhood where I grew up, I'm going to ask them what they remember too.
